Alleghany Students Awarded Scholarships
Blue Ridge Electric Alleghany Board Members Johnny Wishon and Mitch Franklin, Alleghany District Manager Joel Souther, Dylan Houck, Kathleen Joines, Avery Hash, Tanner Rutherford, Kacey Caudill, and Alleghany Board Member Bryan Edwards
Four Alleghany County students were recently selected out of 50 applicants to receive college scholarships from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation.
Each year, Blue Ridge Electric provides scholarships totaling up to $17,500 across its service area of Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes counties to students seeking to further their academic goals. The scholarships awards range from $400 to $2,000 for students pursuing four-year degrees or students or adults seeking two-year degrees in vocational training.
The scholarship recipients are as follows:
• Avery Hash, son of Jim and Donna Hash, $500 scholarship to attend Western Carolina;
• Tanner Rutherford, son of Jimmy and Tracy Rutherford, $500 scholarship to attend Appalachian State University;
• Kathleen Joines, daughter of Steven and Deborah Joines, $500 scholarship to attend Appalachian State University;
• Dylan Houck, son of Rex and Kathryn Houck, $800 scholarship to attend Forsyth Tech;
• Kacey Caudill, daughter of Lori Hirschy, $1,000 to attend University of Georgia.
Students were selected based on a number of factors including academic performance, community service and personal interviews.
This year marks the 57th year Blue Ridge Electric has awarded college scholarships. To date, 453 area students and citizens have received $414,000 to help them attend the college of their choice.
